2009 Texts

1703. 5 January 2009 - 7:03am
Kommetjie is moored
to milkwood shadow,
kelp-bedded shallow.
Slangkop Light upright,
beacon sighted these summer nights,
dashes false passage by flash message.

1704. 6 January 2009 - 5:59am
Only the fronds of the old palms
wave slightly in the early morning
like despairing arms of the castaway
on a wild coast remote
and singular as his nightmares.

1705. 9 January 2009 - 8:21am
A cunning poet lingers,
prolongs her breathing
in, does not gasp
nor tighten but waits:
rises with her torso's apex
held by the finest silk
indices of lust.

1706. 9 January 2009 - 10:43am
A cunning poet listens
to the rhythm of his singing,
a muse bared to his length,
weighted sibilant, sucks
inward deepening surprise
to his height and rhyme.

1707. 10 January 2009 - 11:18am
The wind changes
by great forces,
noon, tide: none
of fickle men, no
whim of CEO, no
poem, rhyme nor
hallowed chant. No
prayer holds back sea, nor
star nor
me.

1708. 11 January 2009 - 7:17am
A man begs God for Love.
He receives a rhyme of sorts
from a half-naked muse.
He unwraps the gift
hypothetically,
realises it's ink of his own pen:
understands.

1709. 11 January 2009 - 4:27pm
A man begs a woman
for love. She looks at his palms,
as if a prayer was offered.
He looks at his palms
to find a lifeline, but left & right
end unhappily short.

1710. 11 January 2009 - 11:29pm
Does she remember
me, my grace? How
I touched her
in silences and memories
of the cave beyond
the valley of fears?
And the moon full
above these tears.

1711. 12 January 2009 - 10:56am
There's no recount:
neither Medes nor Persians,
none so immutable
as give a poet hope
this quiet night,
surf breaking beyond
the pane of these
dreams' darkness.

1712. 15 January 2009 - 9:09am
A painter shows her fist,
no longer the handmaiden,
and God weeps: begotten
one dull Sabbath in its
fading. I take her hand
to my lips, kiss her
one last time.

1713. 19 January 2009 - 9:53am
A poet sits on a rocky shore
examining his fingers -
how artistic,
how sensitive,
how mirrored
by personality and interest:
if only he could look up
at the sea.

1714. 20 January 2009 - 10:26am
The tide is out,
the poet exposed
and the tidal pools.
I sip sweet tea
over the rim
of the bay watching
a dark arrow
of duikers beat
out to sea:
our lives here.

1715. 24 January 2009 - 7:06am
Would a poet call to mind
this morning air, and breathe
this rising sun, the tide ebbing
from the kelp crested shore?
Or sing this song
to Dylan's loving eye?

1716. 24 January 2009 - 7:21am
This city has absorbed me,
my bones its bones,
my blood its tides
and times,
metaphors its spine,
its weather,
its voices singing
and the deep breathing sea.

1717. 24 January 2009 - 7:33am
Men set about to sea quietly.
The odd voice reaches across
the water, a command
perhaps to balance the boat,
to don a life preserver
where deep water calls.

1718. 26 January 2009 - 3:23pm
The old poet works
his lathe, turning
his mind to words
in the dust
& falling similes
of African hardwood.
Soon he will pause
over tea with his pipe
and brak.

1719. 27 January 2009 - 9:35am
A poet sings, her voice
offering charm & necklaced
words held to distance
for perspective. This
is her far place of wind
and memory: her music
calls her home.

1720. 27 January 2009 - 10:10am
An old poet lost in dialogue
with his voices listens
to the kelp rinsed sea
his withered rage failing
with the summer rain
and the long ache
of madness or love.

1721. 27 January 2009 - 11:42am
An old poet lives
in an abandoned city.
Only God is left.
He sulks.
The poet turns to God
'Don't worry: I still adore you.'
God takes out his silk handkerchief.

1722. 28 January 2009 - 9:59pm
She writes to a stranger
she cannot name, hears
his voice between each syllable
each intake, or is it pause,
quickly exhaled as if denying
meaning and patience.

1723. 29 January 2009 - 6:08am
muted grey mauve
dawning light pink
solitary surfer
high tide
a fine left break
the world sleepless
soft eyed
rhythm no rhyme
poetry waiting pen
pick up lines

1724. 30 January 2009 - 6:14am
An old poet considers
freedom, being as air,
noticed only in absence.
He knows she breathes,
hears music in her throat.
Sees her breasts rise & fall
to passion.

1725. 31 January 2009 - 0:02am
an old poet hears
the beginning of time
breaking on the reef
strangers swim there
a million millennia
hence stars shine and a moon
also strangers
also searching

1726. 1 February 2009 - 10:42am
The years have danced
and the dance lifted me
for your inspection, held
up to your gaze & laughter.
Here, in the wilderness of my art,
I sing wild songs to you.

1727. 3 February 2009 - 11:20am
a jealous poet sacks
the ruined city
finds the last part
of speech gagging
in a suburb turns
on his heel trips
on an old kerb
the metaphor cries
like a simile

1728. 3 February 2009 - 6:15pm
An old poet sees death
in his mother's eyes,
her face a mask
over yellow cranium:
dark sockets where light was.
I fear with her,
catapulted too
into the dark.

1729. 7 February 2009 - 9:35am
somewhere in the foothills
we missed each other
the summit unsighted
now I am lost searching
for you my light
fading with each day
and winter promised

1730. 7 February 2009 - 6:54pm
As he ambles in the afternoon
heat he grunts and sweats,
his gonads swaying to the rhythm
of his gait, and him aware yet
that only death brings relief.

1731. 8 February 2009 - 12:12pm
I sit on this lonely shore,
muse, with my muse,
on the colour of solitude.
Its silent green odour,
its deep blue taste, its chuckle.
How time breathes, exhales.

1732. 9 February 2009 - 8:16am
There is melody here
in the mist and surf
breaking green
under a grey dawn.
Ski boats batter out to sea,
kelp impatiently to the kreef
encrusted shoals.

1733. 11 February 2009 - 7:17pm
a poet hears a poet's
electric mouth yum-yum
sing stitches
of an old hanged dog
strolling minstrel tapestry
all nighting highway sisters
cashing in each blow

1734. 12 February 2009 - 10:11am
The yum-yum girl's tattoo
on her arse shows
the white rabbit's hind legs
as it disappears
into a thicket.
Alice, to turn the other cheek,
drinks from the vial.

1735. 13 February 2009 - 6:27am
I write beneath the waning,
seated just proud of high water,
to my yum-yum girl & the moon.
Imagination is a grey gull soaring
over shoals of metaphor & kelp.

1736. 13 February 2009 - 7:58am
Two chacma cross my path
overlooking snake's head light.
They give way
to my unhesitating advance:
the male protective
of his three-legged mate -
gentlemen.

1737. 14 February 2009 - 9:15am
An old poet steps into the night
cloaked in regret.
He smiles at a sudden vision
of beauty, but the shadow
on the other side
is his own. Are his tears
laughter?

1738. 14 February 2009 - 12:21pm
subatomic rhyme aches
in cloisters with black
bean grenades & stomach
pumps predictably exhumed
before bankers set fire
to the city gates
or regurgitated notes

1739. 17 February 2009 – 7:19pm
A man sits on a smooth rock,
his heels cooling
the Atlantic. The tide is out,
the sun sets. The gods did not
intend him witness with
his bright eye speechless.

1740. 19 February 2009 – 7:59am
A poet's eye hears the sun set
in silence and gold and fire.
He tastes love in boulder, pebble,
the warmth of song from old Atlantic
baritones, solo and choir.

1741. 19 February 2009 – 1:07pm
A dead poet finds silence
in a cartoon. Turns gravely,
in a final pun,
to Heathcliff, 'I think that's Kathy
calling!' - round his wrist
the locket of her smile.

1742. 23 February 2009 – 9:11am
Emptiness follows fulfilment
as the moon.
The gulls knowing this,
harvest the intertidal zone.
Thus the poet learns,
by the moon,
fulfilment follows emptiness.

1743. 27 February 2009 – 7:12am
The inner sense of the child
does not judge, but
discriminates accurately.
That child in you,
and me, knows
a simple truth
as simply as the old monk
knows God.

1744. 27 February 2009 – 11:34pm
innocence is the father
of the son who looked back
and watched the plunder
listening to conscience turn
to resolution
to pathogens and cancers
to darknesses

1745. 28 February 2009 - 11:29am
innocence of the child
is judged original sin
in a sense I hear
in a sense I taste
in a sense I see
a tear on my mother’s cheek
in memory of her childhood & mine

1746. 1 March 2009 – 8:19am
I am joined to her
by the whips and scorns
of time she making ready
to travel her papers in order
the undiscovered country
expectant waiting
my bloodknotted cry

1747. 2 March 2009 – 9:19am
an old poet writes a letter
chooses words carefully
slowly as a calligrapher
would forming each syllable
on his tongue rolling
it on his palate tasting poetry

1748. 3 March 2009 – 12:34pm
a novice kneels
reflects impatience
the day turns
in its measure
neither waits
nor quickens
always the same
always renewed
the old monk smiles
reflects patience

1749. 5 March 2009 – 8:55am
the poet exercises
her mind with her body
clears image and dream
in the bend and curve
of limb and spine
fingertips moon
and memory
touches the muse's lip

1750. 7 March 2009 – 5:04pm
“Thunderstorm”
night thunders passed
in a shower of sparks
me acower in the dark
counting seconds
as a finger of God
stabs at me searching
for my whimper
this deathdark night

1751. 8 March 2009 - 7:39am
"Mountain Fire"
the funeral escort treads
the slow path to the summit
each carrying a brazier
flaming golden in the sorry night
the weeping choir's
ashen step moans
low & dark

1752. 11 March 2009 - 9:42am
her All-American teeth
gleam like new cars
either side her red-carpeted
tongue that licks her lower
lip anticipating foreplay
deflating his ego
refocusing him

1753. 12 March 2009 - 10:15am
dawn at moonset
slangkop light's single eye
scans an atlantic
at peace
wars drowned
fishers draw wakes
in the welded sea
kelp waves
I reflect
a passing moment

1754. 13 March 2009 - 10:52am
the electric poet ripples
her pectorals warming up
for late evening flight
on virgin or some other
metaphorical line
reasoning that to be
taken aback
lifts off

1755. 13 March 2009 - 5:45pm
a poet desires heaven
knows what
she puts into words
easing one into this
one into that
until stuffed
then she turns to me
grinning like a lap dancer's
$10 bill

1756. 14 March 2009 - 9:17am
a poet prefers toe straps
the muzzle inhibits
a hard-working tongue
wrapping around
innuendo & cunning
words she deliberates
then inserts
in her thoughtfulness

1757. 14 March 12:10pm
a poet knows a good trick
to play sunday afternoons
in the rough in the wet
raining summer showers
there's a rainbow
the petals
the flowers
her smile
the hours

1758. 16 March 2009 - 8:00am
a small book on a shelf
contains a man's wisdom
the flames of his birth
his scorched tongue
he turns to me
as for help
but i am lost already
in his reflection

1759. 18 March 2009 - 7:51am
the crusty tome of his thoughts
silted and webbed
lies above high water
on imagination's shore
there words jostle like kelp
for air and light
and his reflections

1760. 19 March 2009 - 9:06am
the yum-yum girl's birthday
dances down the cobbles
trailing a fist of balloons
a harmony of laughter
from a cottage of dreams
cheers this old dog

1761. 20 March 2009 - 10:35am
a poet turns another
cheek for crow's inspection
thinking to please
him stalking the verge
gorging road-kill
waiting for God
O lord late again
she touching a lip

1762. 22 March 2009 - 10:24
an old dog gazes at the embers
sees a small flame dance
as a line from an old lyric
he feels the melody in his throat
whisper of her softness
her careful smile

1763. 23 March 2009 - 7:52am
the old dog dozes
dreams REM across
snort and grunt
his flank shivers
in the morning light
suddenly he stands
as if late or watched
by evil intent
wags his tail

1764. 24 March 2009 - 7:36am
a littoral morning
bright as the day's promise
evangelical as all faith & joy
goes about its business
a man passes
we greet
amused by a mystery
of life & death

1765. 28 March 2009 - 1:15pm
the yum-yum girl hangs tuesday
on a snorted expletive
catches a heel grating
sits on a waterfront bollard
watching seamen drip aboard
early hours lemon legged

1766. 29 March 2009 - 7:42am
the old dog sleeps
to the yum-yum girl's strip
he dreams again
butterflies low flying
her lips her smile
her toes crinkling
these words his tears
his laughter

1767. 30 March 2009 - 4:24pm
she stares at me across
decades in disbelief
lost your tongue
she would ask
if she could speak
her small hand in mine
for balance you know
and my old comfort

1768. 1 April 2009 - 10:41am
from here this outcrop
this outlook of forgotten wars
radio static still caught
in rusted entanglements
the flecked steel sea
goes about its lawful occasions

1769. 1 April 2009 - 11:47am
the impregnating sea
embraces me
boning me
in the light
and the morning
glorious as dawn's
touch and warmth
in the shadow
of the lighthouse
still winking east

1770. 2 April 2009 - 11:14am
the reader turns the page
gate to a sense
a poet seeks
in a line incomplete
I hear her voice
beyond the page
a melody still
in the laughter
and tears we share

1771. 3 April 2009 - 7:16am
the quicksilver sea
oyster dawning
the mountain wearing Caesar's purple
the tide's caress
flares in the nostril
I turn to my god
who nods vaguely
in recognition

1772. 3 April 2009 - 9:43am
has a poet a line
unspoken never heard
silent as revenge
deep hidden
as mountain stream
dark as death's dark
eye unseen as backbone
livid as a love letter

1773. 4 April 2009 - 9:37am
the next line is
taken as read
purple clouds lemon slivered rain
the simple lens of the adjective
roads steam invective
I turn to the ghost
sipping Yirgacheffe

1774. 4 April 2009 - 4:00pm
a mandala at low tide
sand on sand
art by art
word for word
moon at dusk
neither meaning
nor explanation
neither applause
nor silence
only the tide flowing home

1775. 6 April 2009 - 8:47am
is there rage at dusk
the light blooded
spilled over
the unsheathed sea
weeping gulls
the sighing reef
all this
enters a man's heart
at the dying
light's rage

1776. 7 April 2009 - 9:03am
a poet sighs
the curtain puffs
in the breeze
from the south
he smiles
recollecting
an old passion
the drowning
in the bay
he watches
beyond gesture
silenced

1777. 8 April 2009 - 7:06am
the morning star
jewels dawn
under her bright eye
Venus and me
watch a great wing
one hundred strong
of Sacred Ibis
priestly white
pass beyond
prayer and praise

1778. 9 April 2009 - 9:46am
autumnal poetry
migrates north
to breed and feed
I watch
as the tide ebbs
or a lover packs
uncertain of return
words are not tears
nor this page
a handkerchief

1779. 10 April 2009 - 1:28pm
a man sees
the moon set
at dawn
his camera
bears westward
his eye reflects
childhood memory
surf as white
as Africa's smile
do I need to record
it it so vivid

1780. 14 April 2009 - 7:33am
what is learning
but a saline drip
of word and image
before death
this algebra
each symbol
a thread of terror
damocles prays
demonstrating faith
in physics

1781. 15 April 2009 - 10:00am
life's the joke
before you laugh
according to a man
of no other opinion
i had to smile
as i turned to god
who was laughing
soundlessly
choking on the apple

1782. 16 April 2009 - 7:41am
these sands at dusk
long beached
this mother of pearl
icy sea grips
my ankles to take me home
shackled to her
stitched by the nose
under mountains
of the moon

1783. 16 April 2009 - 6:49pm
a poet never has the last word
he draws the line
the sun sets
autumn blows in
lightning strikes
the bank calls
baboons on the roof
she smiles
not another word

1784. 17 April  2009 -10:48pm
did a flock roost here
before time
lay eggs
in warm sands
until disaster
turned all to ash
sacred ibis
pick and tweezer
choice morsels
among petrified shells

1785. 18 April 2009 - 11:04am
a thin lipped silence
recollects
turns inward
deaf to laughter
stiffens narrows
to resolve
folds implacable
holds its gaze
as the clock ticks
toward darkness

1786. 18 April 2009 - 6:16pm
the yum-yum girl
writes a poem
to herself
I love you
I love you not
she decides
to take the old dog
for a ride
on her bicycle
in the rain
but she can't wake him

1787. 21 April 2009 - 9:25am
this rind of Africa
exposes myth & pith
great winds scar
my heart I breathe
the light the airs
the poet's song
eagles romance me
this gift of days
this divinity

1788. 23 April 2009 - 9:14am
does the pleasure
principle include
a principal pleasure
she inhales
of mine
there's the rub
the dreams
the mortal coil
yet I hear her cry
little cries at night

1789. 25 April 2009 – 10:00am
I don't expect
my love affairs
to last for long
is the line
from the song
not a line of life
except of strife
with every wife
and every song
goes on too long

1790. 27 April 2009 10:24am
a man searches
his pockets
forgets where last
he saw his love
was it left
was it right
he turns to me
as if i know
we shrug
in silent agreement
about mysteries

1791. 27 April 2009 - 2:09pm
the yum-yum girl
prefers to lie in wait
she takes position
her senses pricked
she rehearses
breathes deep pants
remembers a tune
sung in the heat
of the moment

1792. 28 April 2009 - 3:13pm
the dying girl's
desk is bare
no lover's snap
no leaping dolphin
relieve the blue
partition wall
his thoughts focus
she lies
in the cancer ward
as he types this

1793. 3 May 2009 - 8:20am
the Atlantic is
my church everlasting
where I pray
it receives me
without condition
despite my faults
includes my weakness
as my strength
at my end
bury me here

1794. 4 May 2009 - 1:23pm
autumn rusts as i
drink summer wine
a clear glass rim
weather by north
west this morning
venus rising early
a pair of ibis scream
at primeval dawn
over my body

1795. 5 May 2009 - 1:32pm
a curious mouse
a trifle unworthy
to be fare
stands enraptured
by the way
i watch him
my eagle eye
calculates tragedies
pitch and yaw
he imperatives
of flight

1796. 14 May 2009 - 8:03am
ragged tooth rain
mauls and wrestles
chasing white stallions
across the bay
who rumble headlong
upon the kelp garnished shore
to drown
in the sands
with a sigh

1797. 16 May 2009 - 7:17am
rain drips from eaves
watering boyhood memory
my grandmother's needle poised
in mid sentence
to wit a point
as she darned by the fire
a shawl over her knees

1798. 18 May 2009 - 5:30pm
men in ships know
their gods
call in the depths
of their souls
gulls too pay homage
to the torn sea
cartwheeling
tumbling
as loose cogs
pray to Noah's deal

1799. 21 May 2009 - 10:43am
a poetry of thunder
counts seconds
interstitial echoes
photosynthesis
memory
and prayer
as footnotes
fluency of light
a wheeling gull
grey upon grey
in silence

1800. 23 May 2009 - 7:31am
a sailor's eyes absorb
the sea contain oceans
navigate the galaxy
smell a burning island
beyond his faith's horizon
his compass needle's wake
the depth beneath

1801. 23 May 2009 - 10:19am
no acuity or fiction
no fluency of diction
his Pinocchio nose
his emperor's clothes
his fabrications
or implications
no matter's size
is beyond my lies
who am i

1802. 24 May 2009 - 3:01pm
now somewhere
the sun sets
it is dawn
who is witness
to my life
at my day's dusk
prescient dawn
against the light
the cormorant
measures the lens
the poet's eye

1803. 26 May 2009 - 6:22pm
the lineage of surf
is a ripple
an orison too deep
beyond the ear
of the spirit
to stir its whispered
recitative or choir
its harmonies
or the wave
it’s singing

1804. 27 May 2009 - 10:15am
be wary O Poet
the muse will tease
wisdom from a fool
to a muse herself
and as easily a fool
from an ivory tower
it is well I pass
a mirror at this
threshold

1805. 29 May 2009 - 7:39am
a tall angular man
his limbs strange
geometry of spars
and sails as if dis-
masted by a savage
storm he the last
alive gazes up
would leave it so
begins to sing

1806. 31 May 2009 - 8:35am
missing link lost
fragments of bone
dugs of earth
dogs howl
the lupine light
stirs the mongrel
in men
who's calling
from the hearth
the old embers
sputtering

1807. 1 June 2009 - 10:50am
a man searches
original sin
innocently as a poet
god spots him
a mile off
sends for satan
this holiday
cooling off
at the pool
says Gabby he's yours
fuck him

1808. 2 June 2009 - 11:15am
a Cape Fur seal
bloated dead
its skull grinning
lies flat-backed
above low water
forgotten or not
ever alone
this last voyage
sirens of surf
calling me too

1809. 3 June 2009 - 7:53am
held to the light
is the eye
open to the wind
I breathe
close to you
is my life
listen to my song
touch your hair
your cinnamon kiss
your fingertip
to my lips

1810. 11 June 2009 - 1:00pm
seven sorrows are not enough
nor the four horsemen
hooves that clang
on the glacier
of history none match
this tongued spell
deep throat
of your spittle's truth

1811. 12 June 2009 - 2:32pm
presumption is a bedrock
of error she replied as he tucked
and zipped I see you dress
to the left are you ambidextrous
no but I do enjoy sinister
gratifications

1812. 14 June 2009 - 10:39am
a penumbral moment
the zenith well passed
as I avert my eyes searching
the earth for new life
in the mould well-trodden
by the way and me ever
praying for you

1813. 19 June 2009 - 7:43am
Mars embraces Venus
or otherwise
like gods this dawn
so it seems
they are miles & miles apart
really like men & women
this dawn
Mercury observed horizons below

1814. 19 June 2009 - 9:27am
a great poem
wanders along a shore
among empty shells
flotsam & the body
of a seal still restless
the tide tugging it
the lines of surf
calling to be part of it

1815. 24 June 2009 - 8:18am
a vapid poet sings
coathanger birds
startled leap
decongesting words
gather animated as
deep-throated as
trailerpark harmony
the audience clap
suck our tongues

1816. 24 June 2009 - 12:03pm
caravan romance
kisses lamb chops
the steady drip
rain lubricating
intended spreads
herself pending
rosebush gallows
the neat lathe
wastes itself
on a pedestal

1817. 25 June 2009 - 10:56am
Portnoy complains
to cloth ears
makes every day
the sabbath
reads the book
loudly while at rest
I heard somebody
snigger above
it could have been
my imagination

1818. 28 June 2009 - 9:54am
the slow & steady
rush, a love story
lost in the lyrics
of an old song,
had I faith enough,
or time, or cheek,
to turn her arse
to bend
my brimming
heart's eye

1819. 2 July 2009 - 9:32pm
mother's now
translucent glowing
coldly by this aging
winter sun
autumnal under
a puzzled cloud
forgetful of both
time and place
her hand cold
as fresh chicken

1820. 4 July 2009 - 2:29pm
afternoon jagged
strobed throbs
anticipates climax
in the moment's
heat and festival
the dogs watchful
sniff and wag butts
in ridiculous parody
of style engaged

1821. 8 July 2009 - 9:05am
mother no longer
speaks, she squeaks
a small mammal
of sudden stillness
or quick flutter
her hand
finding mine
reassuring us
touches her forefinger
to my nose

1822. 8 July 2009 - 10:03am
a dirty old man
joins the club
at long last
he finds no rhyme
or reason
to seize the day
instead sets off
in pursuit of
happiness, corners
the market in cliché

1823. 12 July 2009 - 8:37am
mother sleeps
a shallow breath
half snatched
opens her eyes
smiles in her dream
of happy days
sun on her cheek
mountain and sea
an old peace
still comforting

1824. 16 July 2009 - 10:32am
the archaeology
of innuendo raids
love's tomb
dishonours soul
and body
deceit's catacomb
naked as death's
skull's grin
the socket empty
transparent the eye

1825. 17 July 2009 - 9:32am
you sleep
a U-boat
its auxiliary motor
wheezing and
coughing in
the submarine pen
I prepare to board
my stiffening
resolve proud
as the jack
admiring her lines

1826. 20 July 2009 - 8:54am
the speechless
sea the speechless
man the main
maned surf manned
boarded the play
of words the poetry
of this poetry I see
here the lighthouse
below salt & air

1827. 27 July 2009 - 3.33pm
Pompidou is male
functional external
plumbing obvious
internals transparent
for all that unlike Eiffel
how Paris always gorgeous
is a work of art
feminine to me

1828. 1 August 2009 - 3.16pm
a man cannot find comfort
nothing fits his skin
a cloak ill-matched
to climate him irked
as much weathered
by the weight and swell
of a little adverse muttering

1829. 3 August 2009 - 8.28am
mother's words come
from her eyes
yes as bright as
no's stern stare
a grin teased out
downcast in disappointment
I tell little jokes
as if I understand her pain

1830. 3 August 2009 - 8.43am
the confusion of
poem and rhetoric
is a failure of form
over discontent

1831. 17 August 2009 - 2.03pm
Toto never got the message
nor me
paradise blew up
and everybody wept
Jesus said the priest
tear gas incensed
by the porn
and kiss of the last
doomed couple

1832. 19 August 2009 - 12.00 noon
I've always wondered
about romantic love
you know
whether it exists
or not actually
whether she exists
you know
and where for instance
and is she available like

1833. 19 August 2009 - 12.51pm
he admires her
cock-eyed Brazilian
waxes lyrical
over his single digit
held manfully
to her proffered lips
she gasps drops
her ring
it rolls far
out of earshot

1834. 13 August 2009 – 1.21pm
the field is stubbled
rough to touch
and coarse
as a cow's tongue
or the cheek
of a rough man
a peasant still
to this day earthy
strong odours
of seed and barns

1835. 20 August 21009 - 5.32pm
when she had the verge
cut and bush either side
thinned to spare scrub
the well was no longer hidden
the men rejoiced
and took to gather there
in inane chatter

1836. 20 August 2009 - 6.09pm
a man lost his voice
in the busy years
looking at cats
I found it there
in a bush
or was it two
lying exhausted
with a rather large
condom discussing feminism

1837. 21 August 2009 - 7.10am
for you
I smile remember
the fun we had
swopping places
neither on top
too long
where are you now
winter long bitter
snow turned ice
my heart still warm waiting

1838. 22 August 2009 - 8.49am
for some reason
she insists he's
deformed his brain
migrated down
under to settle
in sinny watching
whinny watching
weighty mattresses
reading god books allowed

1839. 24 August 2009 - 9.21am
the Brazilian asks
do I like what I see
the word like is
unsuited for this
fardel this wary life
I grunt to reconnect
sensing
understatement's
underclothes

1840. 25 August 2009 - 10.20am
a man called
Comhesaw came
when I called
he appeared
confused and said
Mr Comcommer
you called
buy a donkey I said
coolly
can you change
ten bucks to silver

1841. 25 August 2009 - 10.14pm
ah O Divine three
I gottenfor the
colour of thine I's
there at bowrain's
end their wear
my hart smelted
gazing into the
ocean of lost buoys

1842. 26 August 2009 - 9.04am
he turns the clock back
all the better to see you coming
to lie in weight
coined noted
bridled and saddled
with a disposition
to match your eyes
his lips too

1843. 26 August 2009 - 9.34am
I don't have
a problem with her
when I'm obedient
without observation or remark
only last Thursday
she smiled
I nearly ejaculated
the Atlantic turned to ash

1844. 27 August 2009 - 11.22am
a man asks a poet
to rhyme don't you know it
a poet would beguile
begins a happy smile
is almost lyrical
certainly farcical
but he stomps out
dark night without

1845. 27 August 2009 - 6.35pm
Carl Bass tells tales
bare-arsed lies
cheeky repartee
flash with sting
bottom-dweller jokes
reads stupid-ass comix
is annually retentive

1846. 29 August 2009 - 8.55am
the poet opened
the can of worms
enjoyed every one
to the last titbit
got sick
got married
inevitably divorced
there were no kids
remarried
opened the next can

1847. 29 August 2009 - 3.57pm
a poet decides to be
novel to write sensibly
to give a shit
but he just can't
hack it everything
comes out layered
cryptic meaningless
like sunshine
and roses

1848. 30 August 2009 - 8.05am
spring flowers
are not jealous
Solomon's glory
is the legend
but the Arum
legions stood ranked
above the cliff
at Wolfgat know
only the year's
green turning

1849. 31 August 2009 - 8.20am
a poet wants
to laugh weeps
in the forest silent
but for the whisper
of airs breathing
she is naked
as the pregnant
moment she smiles
kisses him
the sap rising

1850. 31 August 2009 - 9.06am
a poet has great
expectations
she feels in the pit
of her stomach
a sailor withdraws
just in time
to splash down
from the stars
in her eyes
she tastes his rank

1851. 1 September 2009 - 4.13pm
a poet takes a lover
the way spring
takes a shower
body parts don't
know seasons
believe summer is
eternal like the poet
who never wears
a raincoat in spring

1852. 3 September 2009 - 8.36am
this ancient sea
forever young
its shore whispers
to my depths
these sands of time
turned to stone
our footsteps
hand in hand
sharp etched
to memory's strand

1853. 3 September 2009 - 8.51am
your tongue
has its own language
its own peculiar sense
appropriate to time
proportionate to place
it reaches out
prehensile
in passion's jowls
to tease a truth

1854. 5 September 2009 - 7.06pm
silhouette of trees
long shadows
of sheep crop
winter grass
methodically step
toward a pale sun
evening promises
home and hearth
cardigan and hot tea

1855. 6 September 2009 - 9.47pm
when the time comes
and all the world
fades to incomprehension
will I find it
in me to smile
and know my son
loves me yet
though I totter
to the window
to wave

1856. 7 September 2009 - 12.46pm
take away my tongue
words I savour
roll on my palate
kiss into the breeze
this windy strand
so I am left
speechless as my birthday
my mother also lost
for words

1857. 8 September 2009 - 8.33am
a dead poet lives
in the words
of the living
shaping tongue
to laughter or tears
the heart of matter
and moment
reminds me what
I have forgotten
is everlasting

1858. 9 September 2009 – 9.49am
she is always
strong though now
she shuffles stooped
in her declining years
never backing off an inch
her chin thrust out
to take these last throes
no surrender

1859. 10 September 2009 – 7.25am
when at last
I am mad
forget my name
forget my age
when my smile is all
I can say to you
hold my hand
and remember me
that I wrote this
to you
when I was strong

1860. 10 September 2009 - 10.05am
a jiggered hand
pucks and pinches
each riff twisting
a sad man
a glad man
behind these eyes
so it plays
songs of guilt
and inner sense
searches
the fourth chord

1861. 10 September 2009 - 2.23pm
at the bitter end
no anger remains
all is consumed
no matter
has weight
or substance
or chemistry
all meaning turns
to itself
shrugs off
time and place
laughs

1862. 12 September 2009 - 7.29am
a poet needs rhyme
to make some sense
he spends his time
correspondence
musing about
meter no doubt
the metaphor
very much more
that he fancies
then gives it up

1863. 12 September 2009 - 8.24am
a poet decides
to love herself
doesn't know where
to start
feels herself
here and there
invites the odd man
in who fucks
around leaves her
his bitter seed taste

1864. 13 September 2009 - 9.39am
a poet mirrors
her body
her earthenware
the world reflects
observes parabola
her twin cones
the damp fur
her lust his
parabola of longing
this lengthening
night

1865. 16 September 2009 - 10.52am
are you as fat as me
too I mean like
do you take so many
supplements like
you actually put on
weight I mean like
have you checked
the calories loaded
in a pill

1866. 22 September 2009 - 10.39am
a man prays
his forehead to the dust
he makes signs
he chants
his tongue clever
his mouth a purse
of coin and song
he calls her
to his light
hears her laughter

1867. 26 September 2009 - 9.04am
notes of assembly

potjie of witches
spellings of wizards
scriptures of doctors
mortals of chemists
yawns of accountants
trash of programmers
tearfuls of poets

1868. 28 September 2009 - 6.20am
is beauty found
in the lily of the field
is it found among the dead
flowers that echo
with the prayers
of lost and found memories
sounds of you laughing
with me

1869. 2 October 2009 - 4.48pm
in the end love is
all she has
there is a smack
and ruffle
in the breeze
a sailor's sea ready
about the voyage
bare under her keel
singing an old shanty
to me

1870. 3 October 2009 - 7.14am
the coast is clear
cormorants string
low water skim
the kelp drowned
reef older by far
than the tide of man
where I sit amused
enlightened by
this dawning song

1871. 3 October 2009 - 7.23am
am I truly no more
than self conscious
energy drinking tea
day dreaming
horizons clipped
and bent to the deep
breathing sea itself
a studied calm
pending storm

1872. 7 October 2009 - 8.44am
a poet listens
to the radio
tunes in to static
interference
the death of songs
patter dumbing
ads numbing
he switches off
switches channels
to find his poet

1873. 8 October 2009 - 7.01am
please don't stop
the rain it lilies me
I blooming fields
of gold the tunic
royal as jelly
god save
anthems songs
blackbird praises
four and twenty
rain stopped

1874. 9 October 2009 - 9.33am
a poet always is
a tear away
you remember
the seeping joy
of lost loves
rediscovering
what you found
you'd never lost
but oh how you
bared all to find
a rhyme

1875. 9 October 2009 - 11.34am
please stop the rain
chill me
drill me
thrill me
please don't stop
the pain
again
a gain
call me
enthral me
appal me
please don't stop
the rain
the same
smile

1876. 10 October 2009 - 6.40am
morning comes
essence of coffee
sensual glory
spreads limbs
of light the sea
sighs moans cries
in the offing
men come and go
centred by purpose
given and taken

1877. 10 October 2009 - 12.07pm
Africa is unmoved
the wind blows
flowers bloom
cormorants fish
suicide bombs
Pakistan plays
cricket the empire
of ashes stiff-necks
war games
jackboots graves

1878. 10 October 2009 - 8.48pm
so the song ends
the poem begins
I breathe thick air
a syllable emerges
crashes into the opposite
wall closely followed
by a second
forming a hesitant
metaphor

1879. 14 October 2009 - 6.19am
the old monk understands
nothing of quantum physics
time is an old friend the bearer
of memories an ocean
always the same
always different

1880. 14 October 2009 - 6.26am
the old monk wakes
refreshed smiles
another day close
to the divine joke
walks the shore
his humour
exercised
by surf his footprints erased

1881. 14 October 2009 - 9.00am
the old monk does not know
desire only life's lessons
of acceptance and fortitude
he sees the moon's face smile
beyond time and tide and man

1882. 15 October 2009 - 7.20am
silence fills my head
each fathom dark
unreflecting bloat
were it pain
I would scream
for want of an ache
a tear perhaps
to find a way home

1883. 17 October 2009 - 7.20am
the old monk sits
on a bench to greet
the day before it
turns to anger
it is god's time
when messages come
on the wind
like leaves or poems

1884. 17 October 2009 - 4.29pm
afternoon light
sets up the game
the girls blowing
hard the boys tough
and looking for soft
touches deft fingers
plucking themselves

1885. 18 October 2009 - 7.51am
what day is this
sleeping under cover
amusing himself
she curled coiled
high noon noose
him trotting in bareback
her fine rump glistening

1886. 19 October 2009 - 12.57pm
her eye serves
his movement
him fastidious
a gourmet
dining fine
the fine linen he
wipes an upper lip
she interrupts
with a delicate cough

1887. 22 October 2009 - 5.18pm
the old monk loves
a joke only today
he laughed aloud
slapping his thigh
as it started to rain
I was promised sun
he said to himself

1888. 23 October 2009 - 1.46pm
what is a poem
beside the sea
a thought expiring
wave after wave
intoxicating
sour breath
salty rime
lines of surf
illiterate similes

1889. 24 October 2009 - 6.10am
a man searches
for grace he looks
in beautiful places
stars shores
music science art
dark light
he googles
he writes poems
for grace

1890. 26 October 2009 - 7.25am
a man lost knows
his truth how ends
require beginnings
thunder lightning
so he turns
he spins and spins
others applaud
his stability

1891. 27 October 2009 - 8.12am
then she speaks
of falling
of rain and leaves
her tears
all in a long life
how summer came
as her sailor's gifts
from a far coast

1892. 27 October 2009 - 3.30pm
daughter of Byron
mathematician
first programmer
before Babbage's engine
wrote reason not rhyme
algorithms of difference
Ada Lovelace

1893. 28 October 2009 - 10.16am
once before
the story began
before the graves
were dug
men returned
joined the women
before the sons
turned to poetry
and loathing

1894. 29 October 2009 - 7.16am
a poet defines truth
white as Arum lilies
as mountain stream
as surf on a reef
never as history
nor priest
nor court
nor word written

1895. 30 October 2009 - 8.31am
I manual cant
o grape won
con fester two
in yer end do
und pro poesy
newed grammer
filler soft histry
und matthew
masticates digits

1896. 30 October 2009 - 5.07pm
he felt her kentish
canter buried like
undoubting tom
who knows how
kings fuck
with truth lying
ann to ann
the std laying
spunky low

1897. 30 October 2009 - 5.34pm
my life with all
its trials unhappy
days its sunshine
gloom and doom
self pity have led
here to this
perfect beach
purple mountains

1898. 5 November 2009 - 7.01am
the old monk walks
in the foothills
here the view
is the air
of hawk and honey bee
neither opinion
nor prayer matter
so close to god

1899. 7 November 2009 - 7.22am
the rain never tires
prodigal clouds
arrive leave
ancient cavalry
ferocious moustached
batter the walls
we heat oils
and balms within

1900. 7 November 2009 - 9.34am
the old monk watches
trout motionless
green against the flagstones
loosens his cassock
steps naked into the stream
the trout watching

1901. 9 November 2009 - 6.35am
the old monk still
takes cold showers
it used to cool
a natural passion
and cleanse
his body and mind
now he listens
to morning song

1902. 9 November 2009 - 2.33pm
O night
government of shadows
a line stolen
from a poet
who the jealous
self admires
sickened by the image
in this dry well
desiring

1903. 10 November 2009 - 6.58am
the unspeakable
is not the sea nor
this grey morning
it's neither rage
nor pity nor tears
it is not god's will
nor the devil's work
it is my loss of heart

1904. 10 November 2009 - 4.28pm
eagles overhead
cool air in my hair
you can never leave
the hotel checked in
all corrupted lines
the singer's last
resort canned now

1905. 10 November 2009 - 4.37pm
seedy downtown
bar snookered
the riff lays me out
sip Ethiopian
weed drifts in
lying low the camp
fire promising
to unload
blows her
1906. 10 November 2009 - 4.52pm
he does not turn
would not know
perfection him
crucified by her
father who thought
her purity could be
bottled sold into
bars poledancing
her muffled ass

1907. 10 November 2009 - 4.57pm
her bush in flames
cut back in your end
do not touch me
where she cried
hoping for lip
now that the fire
had burnt the syllables
he tongued her

1908. 11 November 2009 - 9.42am
the old monk weeps
for the murderer
who lives
with his hatred
gnawing
at the bones
of his soul
only death
will redeem
if he's spared

1909. 11 November 2009 - 9.48am
a poet finds torment
in the eyes
of desire seeing
herself consumed
yet her appetite
unfed and the pit
of her belly
craves fulfilment

1910. 11 November 2009 - 12.45pm
a poet waves
mistakes farewell
for arrival
after a short voyage
across a strait
she calls me
but the wind takes
her voice
out to sea

1911. 11 November 2009 - 3.27pm
a man has visions
tastes her salt lips
inhales her rapt
attention her cheek
turned for better
access he would plunge in headless
had she moved her ass nearer

1912. 12 November 2009 - 8.54am
then the old monk
turns to a brother
a simple man
without malice
dull and worthy
like himself
he muses
though less worthy
less dull

1913. 13 November 2009 - 9.48am
the old monk sits
under the willow
weeping by the brook
the stream's melody
and his reverie
of life and death
are faith's overture

1914. 15 November 2009 - 12.10pm
the old monk speaks
to god in tongues
unwritten texts
luminous mystery
of myth & magic
visions of earth
and fire and bones
scattered

1915. 16 November 2009 - 7.44am
it is overcast
under this cloudless
blue her breath
and bark sharp
fanged at the heels
of my unease
were I a man
indulged I'd smile

1916. 17 November 2009 - 9.11am
god's indifference
to the good man
is the cornerstone
of the old monk's
faith it is evil
that attracts
god's attention
and light

1917. 17 November 2009 - 10.21am
a poet dreams
in figures of speech
she speaks
in silences
I hear her name
a whisper
a sibilant sighing
calling a man
who is a ghost

1918. 19 November 2009 - 9.15am
the old monk listens
to tantra mantra
feels a novice
smiles at a flash
of memory ignited
by repetition
and rhythm
and hindsight

1919. 22 November 2009 - 9.41am
a flock of gulls
whirls over the reef
the old monk sees
the hand of god
everywhere
the great mystery
without meaning
or message or man

1920. 23 November 2009 - 7.20pm
lecherous ghosts
kite the night
under football stars
gambling on a draw
one all
she fires a cross
too low for him
to nod
into the far corner

1921. 24 November 2009 - 7.41am
a man trusts
because he believes
the old monk trusts
because he knows
a man seeks understanding
the old monk waits

1922. 24 November 2009 - 5.21pm
a woman I know
takes in lovers
she believes
nobody notices
her pain
her pleasure
is not coming
when he calls
her name
he hears voices
other men
farming her

1923. 25 November 2009 - 11.13am
a poet devours
a man stuffing him
in head first like
a python slowly
deliberately
her jaw aching
inch by inch
she swallows him whole

1924. 26 November 2009 - 11.33am
she didn't know
my name
she's known
sixty years and more
nor my father's
nor my sister's
nor my brother's
nor my mother her own

1925. 26 November 2009 - 11.46am
my mother knew
she didn't know
who she is
where why what
the hell's going on
we held hands
and wept together
for all times sake

1926. 27 November 2009 - 9.42am
what's in a name
do gulls
whirling over
have names
is my name me
in the crowd
taken away
am I less
is my mother's smile
label enough
in this light
and laughter

1927. 28 November 2009 - 8.48am
the tide at its furthest
ebb the quicksilver sea
in its cups here where
I sit the horizon imagines
I see mountains
where is the heart
and flow of reflection

1928. 28 November 2009 - 2.23pm
a man tires
even flies rest
the tempo slows
the sun waits at noon
across the harbour
the angler rests
his rod on a bollard
he lights a pipe
a gull shrieks

1929. 29 November 2009 - 11.09am
I love my feet
as I do ugly relatives
from the far country
who seem to wash
only when necessary
a bit down at heel
and furry claws
where nice people
have toes

1930. 1 December 2009 - 9.17am
a man shaves his lip
practises his kiss
his wink
in the mirror
checks his profile
left eyebrow right
hey hey hey
bares his teeth
his tongue yuck
where's it been

1931. 2 December 2009 - 1.11pm
O angels' tongues
O sounding brass
O cunning poet
O humble ass
O righted wrongs
O strictly cash
O lusty goat
O smoky stash
O little dick
O very quick

1932. 2 December 2009 - 6.27pm
charity's subtle
hypocrisy incense
to its righteous
stench gutters
good intentions
litters casts out
dumps my guilt
at convenience
spirits and blood
and coin

1933. 4 December 2009 - 7.52am
few survive
the impact
we are after all
thin-skinned
balloons
blood filled to
split and splash
a bloody mess
that year
the comet strikes
a glancing blow

1934. 5 December 2009 - 10.36am
her lips welcome
warm as African
bosoms his licked
nervously
a thin scar cut
across some face
of cold Northern
inheritance bitter
weathered
opinions spat out

1935. 9 December 2009 - 8.15am
time's rage
gets you
in the end
these soft focus days
misty as Zyklon-B
memory's hum
nerveless
the syringe
the last shot
the makeover
taking cover
in back yards

1936. 10 December 2009 - 8.21am
the unbridled poet
speaks ill of men
mothers' loving
kindness made
as if he knew
she meant well
by scorn
him hardened
scarred tears worn
to leather and bone

1937. 11 December 2009 - 8.11am
the old man notices
the aliens first
peripherally
as ghostly images
with complex eyes
sudden quick movements
and a language
of rapid screams
and low hisses

1938. 11 December 2009 - 2.03pm
the wicked witch
slips into something
more comfortable
that shows her bosom
to better advantage
cleaves his imagination
to first principles
and second thoughts

1939. 12 December 2009 - 10.20am
the old woman
and two old dogs
totter the promenade
she speaks to them
as to children
both disobedient
and cherished
the spirit willing
the light bright

1940. 24 December 2009 - 9.07am
mirror speaks
idiom of vanity
wicked witch bites
red apple
Adam trousers snake
Eve spreads thinly
every which way
nothing helps
the mirror cannot
see itself

1941. 24 December 2009 - 9.55am
it is dark within
without light
studied in difference
his the lens
of the mad eye
ego closes
his mind
turns him
from god
to man
to demon
the woman knows
this

1942. 30 December 2009 - 6.49pm
some believe
the world ends
seas rush in
wolf packs howl
ice banks
the harbour wall
a low sun slinks
in bitterness
the old monk
prays for guidance
and hot tea

1943. 31 December 2009 - 9.09am
words crumble
into ashes
of an old year
soon a fossil
rain comes
exposes a vertebra
of the last tears
the poet has
seeing his demise
her verse guttering
the end
